WARDROBE BASICS: THE SILK SHIRT

Wardrobe Basics: The Silk Shirt I Check it out on viennawedekind.com

As promised in last week’s Editor’s Letter, I’m currently trying to focus more on wardrobe basics and what pieces a modern woman really needs. The goal is to share some tipps & tricks with you guys on how to combine your existing wardrobe with a few seasonal investments.

Within the past years I did lots of closet clean-outs and although I love to try new trends and seasonal must-haves, I always end up wearing my trusted wardrobe basics. Because they simply make me feel good. As I’ve already mentioned my Fall Shoe Capsule Collection, which makes getting dressed so much easier, it’s now time to focus on essential clothing.

So let’s get straight into the world of WARDROBE BASICS and let’s talk about a pretty underrated garment: the (black) silk shirt. There is just something about a silk shirt that you won’t find in any other shirt. I mean is there any better feeling than soft silk on your skin? I doubt it.

PROS: These kind of shirts feel like you’re wearing a cloud – airy, barely there and incredibly chic. For me a silk shirt is a legit everyday essential because it works for business hours as well as for weekends. Especially a slightly oversized fit like my &otherstories Shirt has the right mix between feminine (=the silk fabric) and masculine (=the boyish cut). Silk is also a natural material and if you take good care of it, you’ll have it for years and years to come.

CONS: I must admit Silk isn’t the easiest fabric to handle. It wrinkles quite quickly and can easily be damaged by the wrong treatment. Silk can shrink up to 10% and raw silks may lose some of their gloss if machine washed. I recommend Dry Cleaning or a careful Hand Wash (in cold water) to be on the safe side…

To sum up: A silk shirt might not be as carefree to handle as a white cotton shirt but the fact that you can wear it from anything from Jeans/Leather Pants/Tailored Trousers to Midi Skirts/Denim Minis/Shorts makes it totally worth an investment. Sophisticated & easy to combine – that’s what makes it such a great Wardrobe Staple.

Another great blog Carola. I’m on the hunt for the perfect black silk shirt. :)

Also, a heads up, I just received an email supposedly from you about “college essays” – it’s obviously spam but it shows up as a Word Press email, the sort I get when you respond to comments, etc.

Dear Jennifer, thank you so much! And yes, I also got this college essay email and immediately informed my IT department to take a closer look into this. So sorry about this!!

Those shoes! Just stunning. Actually, my black silk shirt is sort of faded now, I probably need an update. Love wearing them, or in navy, cream or white. They get so much wear!
