AIGNER has been one of the most consistent bag brands when it comes to creating high-quality, everyday bags but what also deserves some attention is the brand's show collection. What I've witnessed during Milan Fashion Week was by far my favorite AIGNER collection to date. DIVINE was the Spring Summer 2020 show theme and indeed: DIVINE were the bags I've seen:

Overall the collection was wearable, elegant and modern – dedicated to confident and sensual femmes. The new AIGNER woman loves timeless bags with a modern twist. Fluid materials (chiffon and crepe) meet exclusive Vaccetta leather tote bags and metallic nuances. Voluminous skirts and pants inspired by traditional spanish and latin-american clothing are paired with unexpected details like tortoiseshell heels, XL canvas totes and statement hats. Heavenly neutrals like earthy tones,  Antique White and Feather Grey. Apron-like dresses and woven leather jackets. Logo-adorned bucket bags and mini box bags tingle down the runway.

Creative director Christian Beck managed to create a beautiful Reinterpretation of the Aigner DNA. Minutes before the show, in the middle of the backstage buzz, I got the chance to speak with him about his inspirations, modern dressing and unconventional materials:

I was already able to take a sneak peek at the new SS2020 collection and I really like what I see. What was your inspiration this season?

This season's theme is DIVINE, so I imagined a woman getting ready for the evening or a night out. She walks down the stairs and looks... divine. That image stuck in my head while creating the collection.

How would you describe the collection in 5 keywords:

traditional
south-american vibes (whirling skirts, mexican high-top hats, folklore elements)
elegant and feminine but still strong
mono-colours
love for details

What does the design process for a collection look like?

Well, that's obviously a very long process. I'm already creating the next collection that's why I'm constantly searching for inspiration. My main source of inspiration are museums. Whether it's Seoul, Tokyo or New York – I'm always eager to visit new exhibitions.

Furthermore I love to observe people on the streets and I frequently dive into the AIGNER Archive for fresh inspiration. The brand roots in the 70's so the new heritage / folklore theme goes perfectly with today's aesthetics and I love to play with these elements.

On Project Runway, the US designer show, there is one famous challenge everyone is afraid of: the unconventional challenge. What kind of unusal materials would you use to create something special?

I personally am a big fan of natural materials, so I wouldn't work with plastic or something artificial. But here at Aigner we already work with these kind of natural materials. We already had a wooden bag and clothes made from bamboo. These might be new materials but come from natural ressources. For me that's more interesting to work with!

Thx Christian, I can't wait to see what the next season brings us!
